19. day - 18/10/2007 -

We skipped the flag hoisting today and rented a car to see the island. Niue is an elevated atoll (around 4 times bigger than Rarotonga). There are more caves to discover on the island of limestones but there are also some nice shapes on the sea shores. We felt every road goes to an adventurous place so the island has really unique rock shapes.
We visited rain forests, caves and chasms. We climbed toothed rocks among them sandy oasis with coconut trees. We climbed into blow holes and saw fresh water lake near the caves and many butterflies. It was also interesting to see the left houses at the eastern part of the island with the graves around. Some of the villages looked like a place after plague, nobody lived there anymore.
In the evening the commodore of the yacht club organised BBQ in his house. All the yachties were invited. We were with Moonshadow, Roxi and Imagica.

20. day - 19/10/2007 -

Niue was first colonized by Samoa then Tonga invaded it in 16th century. Captain Cook had got a hostile reception in 1774. Cook called the island Savage Island. The island bad reputation kept the whalers away from it. The first succeded missionaries arrived in the 19th century. In 1900 Niue was taken over by the UK then later transfered to New Zealand. Niue became internaly self-governing (free association with NZ) on 19 October 1974 (Constitution Day). The smallest self-governing island today.
In the morning we saw again whales around the boat. Then we cleared out and took back the rental car. The owner of the rental car company gave us a lift to the local school where the progammes started early morning. After the speeches there were dancers from Niue, Cooks, Tonga and Tuvalov. On the yard many marketeer offered their artefacts. There were some contests during the day such as coconut and javelin throwing, basket making and fire lighting.
We tried the net also during the day but it did not work. We paid NZD 10 for the moorings per day. The coconut bread was really nice in the small shop in the town.

21. day - 20/10/2007 -

We left Niue at 10 am. After the morning calm sea we got 20 knots of wind and rising waves. The predicted wind arrived, but it was a bit stronger.

22. day - 21/10/2007 -

We were surfing on the waves. Our bait was taken again by a beast. It tore the steel wire this time. We could speak with Moonshadow on the SSB and now we know that every boat left Niue after us. Our arrival to Tonga is the next day..

24. day - 23/10/2007 -

This day does not existed for us because we sailed accross the date line and therefore we arrived at Tonga on the 23rd. It is interesting the early missionaries came from Australia to Cooks Island held the Sunday service always on the wrong days..
