10. day - 19/10/2006 - , Ciunad BolivarThis is the place, where we could find clean streets. At least in the center, where there are some fine buildings with a nice cathedral. Of course a few block away there were a lot of garbage.
We booked a 3 day trip to the Angel Falls. This is the world highest waterfall. . | | | The cathedral | | The shore of the Orinico | | | | | | |

11. day - 20/10/2006 - , CanaimaWe flew to Canaima in a small 5 seeter airplane. We met our indian guide.
We were packed into a motorized canoe, and visited the lower falls. These were amazing. We could walk right behind them!
Then we were taken by the canoe to the lower camp, where we spent the night in hammocks.

12. day - 21/10/2006 - , Angel-fallsAfter the heavy rainfalls the night was really chilly. We were cold! It was not too comfortable to sleep in hammocks.
In the morning we continued our voyage with the motorized canoes up on the river. The water was amazing, almost red, due to the ferro-oxid content. It was very exciting, we were motoring against fast rapids.
We reached the upper camp and in an hour we were trekking up on the not so big hill to a viewpoint, where we were able to take a lot of pictures of the awesome Angel Falls. It was also possible to take a quick, cold dip in one of the pools.
Our indian hosts prepared a delicious dinner on open fire (still no electiricty or any extra).

13. day - 22/10/2006 - Just after daybreak we come back to the lower camp. Quick breakfast (we also met a hungarian group).
It was a fast down-run with the current into Canaima, where the airplane was already wainting for us.
We headed back to Cumana on the night bus.

14. day - 23/10/2006 - , Back to workAfter this recreation the workdays came. We will do the antifouling, on the right side of the boat we will use some old hungarian paint which have been found by Geza inside the bottom of one of the many compartments. On the left side, we will use the red Venezuelan antifouling, so the result might be a little bit funny.. |
15. day - 24/10/2006 - Just after daybreak we can handle the temperature – so it is antifouling time!
The locals have interesting behavours. When somebody is working in the boatyard, they gather together and keep looking the worker from 1 meter distance. It was a little bit disturbing in the beginning, but now we got used to it.
In the afternoon we succeded in the week long task of buying some local antifouling!

16. day - 25/10/2006 - After antifouling time we prepared the sails and the running rigging.
On the 2nd of December there will be elections here, in Venezuela. Everywhere the current president have his propaganda.

17. day - 26/10/2006 - Daybreak – antifouling time!
We started to mount navigation computer and various equipments, which have been removed for security purposes a few months ago.
We found a little, but possible serious problem, the exhaust seacock heavily corroded. On more line on the must to do list.

18. day - 27/10/2006 - Daybreak? – Yes, antifouling.
I was mounting the EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicator Rescue Beacon) and accidentally I turned the switch on it. Fortunately it was only a test switch and I did not called for help throug the COSPAR-SARSAT satellite system. At least the test is ok. It can be tested 5 times, after that, the battery have to be replaced (by an official service station). Geza told me later, that this was the 3rd time. Oops!
Our program for the night (after a big barbeque) was amazing the rats around out boat. I wonder, whether some cats could make some interesting rampage around…
