| 22/07/2013 - 27/09/2013 »» page 3/8 »» | ...continued from the previous page | 18. day - 08/08/2013 - , Hunting for mud crabsIn the morning we anchored again to the village. Two U.S. ships were tided together that night for kava drinking with the villagers.
Together with the locals we caught a number of mud crabs. The mud crabs are large and tasty, but the claws have to be avoided while hunting. The villagers were incredibly skilled getting them even under the mangrove roots or in underground holes. We were also taught how to catch and prepare them. We prepared them on Rotor. The remaining crabs were returned to the village, from which we kept 3 more alive because we promised them to Bamboozle. The important thing is to keep the crabs alive, so they remain fresh. We fed them with coconuts and put them under a shadow so they would not dry out.
We also learned the technique of gathering shellfish . Already we can realize when a shell lurks under the sand, in this case we can easily spoon them out with one finger. | 19. day - 09/08/2013 - , DonationThe pre-school teacher gets only half of the salary that the teachers get paid. The rest was collected in donations. Since there is a lot of boat around, Joji (deputy headmaster) thought it was time to organise a school fundraiser. Each family brought a dish of fruit sold by a few dollars. The mango is not in season here, but there was papaya, coconut, banana and passion fruit. One ship had plenty of used clothing, which was also released for the locals for a sale of $1-2. They have collected more than $ 200.
The day began with races (sack, egg balancing, glass tilt ) in which the sailors took part with the children. After lunch, the students presented the local Fijian meke dance. Then the locals asked the sailors to join the dance. They have a favorite music titled Azonto.
After the show, we left the village and together we celebrated our wedding anniversary. Fulaga is an amazing place for a wonderful occasion to celebrate.. | 20. day - 10/08/2013 - , SeafoodThe Italian sailors are really good fishermen. We ate with them their catch of the day. Caps Tres and we took the dessert. The dinner finally managed six catches (including shell pasta , a giant octopus with potatoes and fish in foil). The sea is rich with incredible food.
At night, the thunder clattered around us. The electronic equipments were packed in aluminum foil. | 21. day - 11/08/2013 - , Rest dayIn the night we collected 30 liters of fresh water. Now we have 260 liter water in our tank.
It was Sunday and our rest day.. | 22. day - 12/08/2013 - , Farewell from the sailors who are leaving usWith the Italian boat we prepared a farewell party for Caps Tres. They plan to go to Suva. We knew they love the lobster, so we prepared it for them. The locals saw us looking for it, so they came by and brought one for us. . | 23. day - 13/08/2013 - , Visitors on the boatWe went back to the village because we invited one of the families to the boat. Salote and her husband, Mini visited us . He would have liked us to drink kava together. The village has only one cooler at the school , and only a couple of houses have ovens. Therefore, we thought that the fried pizza will be nice for the event. But as usual our guests did not arrive empty-handed. Mini carved us a kumete (like a tania bowl just much smaller). It was a great surprise for us with his happy anniversary carving on it. He can complete one just within a few hours. So he began it at 6 am today to be able to finish for the afternoon party started at 2pm. Salote finished a palm leafed bag on the boat. In addition, kava was crushed and we drank it with rain water. They also brought fish prepared in coconut juice and boiled cabbage leaves and cassava. They liked the pizza. Constantly repeating that Maleka (which is delicious ) .
After they left , we joined a U.S. kava ceremony.. | 24. day - 14/08/2013 - , Farewell kava drinkingWe have been invited to the deputy headmaster for one last kava drinking. They were teasing us that we drank the first kava in Fulaga. Well, the first (with the village girls), the second (with Joji), the third (organised by the village), the fourth (with two American boats and with the villagers), the fifth (the villagers on Rotor), the sixth (with another American boat and the locals), the seventh and the final in the house of Joji. It seems we also have kava running through our veins.
Before we arrived at the kava ceremony. Salote took us into her house. She said it was lunch time, although it was already at 2 pm. She slaughtered a chicken for us to dine. (And moreover, she cut her finger meanwhile.) There is no fridge in her house so the whole chicken had to be eaten. Luckily we had Tiger around and we could call them into the house to eat.
In the evening we took Salote back to the boat because her finger was still bleeding. It turned out that her mother is the nurse on the island, but there are no drugs. We offered her what we could and she was very pleased. . | 25. day - 15/08/2013 - We spent four weeks at Fulaga. This was our first trip where we had a tearful goodbye from the locals. We went into our friends house for a last word. The chief seemed to be better and welcomed us to his house for the farewell. We also got some vegetables from Shalote , cassava and pumpkin . Master Joji was waiting for us and Ma with weaved birds. Against mosquitoes we got a home-made fan . We gave them a Rubik cube in return , and all the videos and images were copied to their computer that we took in Fulaga. Tao, the principal said that the kids will remember Rotor as well and the common funs : sack racing, dancing , etc.
Fulaga is a beautiful and unique place. For us , the place was beautiful , because the people were kind , honest, open and inquisitive and moreover sharing. We have never felt such a warm welcome during our trip so far in different cultures.
Our Fulaga story ends here . Over the next few days, we prepare the boat for a sail. But before still have some fun with the sailors (including some joint programs such as snorkeling and dinghy boarding ) .. | 27. day - 17/08/2013 - Dinghy boarding.... | Continues on the next page... | | | |
